SOCCER DRILL: POSSESSION UNDER PRESSURE

FOCUS OF SESSION

  • Keeping Possession/Composure

  • Good Passing

  • Creating Space

WHAT TO COACH

  • Well Weighted Passes - make sure the players focus on the weight & accuracy of their passess

  • Ball Control - When receiving a pass, can the players first touch be into space & away from the defender?

  • Awareness - What are the options before the player receives the ball? Can they see what players are open for the next pass? Can they move into space to make the area larger?

  • Communication - Talk to teammates; Direct others using hand signals; Make eye contact

PLAYERS

9 to 16 (In the following drills we will use 12 players as mostly teams of 4. If less use teams of 3 & if an odd players use them as an ‘overload’ player on one of the attacking teams)

DRILL #1

PLAYERS: 12

SIZE: 10x10 yards

GOALS: 0

In this setup there are 12 players.

4 players (attackers) start inside the square. The remaining players (defenders) pair up & wait on the side taking turns entering the square to win the ball off the attackers.

Attackers are aiming to keep possession for as long as possible while the defenders try to win possession or force the ball out. As soon as the defenders win the ball they leave the square, another ball is passed into the attackers & the next pair of defenders enter.

Swap attacking team once all pairs have defended or every 2 minutes.

PROGRESSION: Make more competitive by timing how long the attacking team can hold possession of the ball until each pair has won it (go through two or three times if only a couple of pairs). The team of attackers who holds the ball the longest wins.
