FOCUS OF SESSION
This session encourages & develops players ability to play through a crowded midfield
WHAT TO COACH
Make sure the middle third zone players play in a diamond formation so there are always options either side & in front or behind for the ball carrier.
Make use of the overload in midfield by finding a spare player that is ahead of the ball (ie furthest, safest pass forward)
Players should receive the ball on their furthest foot so they can pass or move forward
THE DRILL
12 Players
Set up a 40x25 yard area divided into 3 zones with a mini goal at each end.
3 teams of 4 players with 1 team as neutrals who play on the team in possession.
6 players in the middle zone (2 from each team) & 3 players in each end zone (1 from each team). Players cannot leave their zones.
Play starts from one end with teams trying to work the ball through the thirds to score in the goal at the other end. Once successful they immediately work the ball back the other way in continuous play.
Progression: 1 midfielder can break into the end zone to support the attack
