SHOOTING DRILL - "SHOOT-FEST"

Updated: Aug 18, 2021

This is a high intensity, highly competitive shooting drill.

SHOOT-FEST

  • 5-12 PLAYERS (+ 2 GK if available) If only 5 players just set up one side. If no GK's just use poles a metre inside the corners of the goals for players to aim at.

PURPOSE:

  • High intensity shooting drill under pressure from defenders. Highly competitive.

SETUP:

  • 5 to 12 players (+ 2 GK if available) If only 5 players just use one side. If no GK's just use poles a metre inside the corners of the goals for players to aim at. 3v2 or 4v2.

  • Split the area in to two halves. Place full or mini goals at each end. Spread 5 balls along each side of the half way line.

  • Organise two teams - preferably 5 on each team. 3 v 2 on each side (3 attackers v 2 defenders)

DRILL:

  • Attacking teams score as many goals in 2 minutes.

  • Attackers score in the goals to score a point. If defenders win the ball they must dribble the ball across the halfway line to score a point.

  • If the ball goes out of play or the defenders score a point an attacker collects a ball from the half way point and launches an attack.

  • After all 5 balls are used up or 2 minutes, count up the points for both teams.

  • Change attackers and defenders regularly.

COACHES NOTES:

  • Movement - As the attackers have an overload they should look to use the width (and depth) of the pitch to help create space between the defenders for a pass or shot.

  • Combination Play – Attackers should combine with quick passes to move the defenders around and to create chances to score. Also underlapping/overlapping by one of the attackers can create a 2v1 situation.

  • Finishing – The positions players will be taking shots from will be constantly changing. Encourage attackers to shoot with both feet from different angles and to take the shot on if they have a yard of space.

IMAGE 1: Starting set up

IMAGE 2: #2 for the Circle attackers has had an early shot as #4 for the defenders didn't close him down quickly enough.

In the other half, #2 for the Square attackers has laid the ball off to #3 who overlapped and created a 2v1 situation, #3 then shoots as he is close to the goal.
